| NGC's Third Tertiary Level Natural Gas Workshop Sees Enthusiastic Response From Students | |
| We never forget that students
are future workers The importance of career choice was never far from our minds. We offered a module on fields of study for employment in the energy industry. This was presented by the Campus Academic Administrator of UTT. Who knows, maybe in a few years graduates of our workshops will be doing their part for national development right here in NGC! Young people like to keep moving We sited the workshops at our Head Office in Point Lisas, but of course, bearing youthful energies in mind, didn’t confine students to the workshop area for the duration of the programme. Can you say field trips? One was a half-day tour of the Point Lisas Industrial Estate, NGC’s Phoenix Park Valve Station, Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited, and NGC’s Field Office and Warehouse. For their second field trip, students chose between a visit to NGC’s facilities at Guayaguayare, in particular the Beachfield slug catcher, and a visit to Atlantic LNG, Point Fortin. The students’ final evaluation didn’t take the form of the pen and paper quiz to which they’ve grown accustomed in academic life. Instead, they were invited to play NGC’s Gas Rush game , with questions based on the knowledge they acquired during the week.(The Gas Rush game, first introduced at the NIHERST Sci-Technofest earlier this year, has been in instant hit with players of all ages, and is set to become a mainstay of NGC’s education programme.) Students who successfully completed the workshop received a certificate of participation. All told, over 300 students responded to newspaper advertisements and applied for inclusion. 150 participants were selected to take part. The overwhelming positive feedback has led NGC to begin planning for next year, in which we expect to hold 4 workshops. Through our partnership with UTT, we hope to develop the programme so that the workshop can be used to earn credits that can count towards any student’s degree programme. |
Here are some of the participants remarks:
"It was fun because of the environment. It was relaxing and enjoyable and I didn't feel like I was in a classroom." "The type of accommodation was beyond my expectations; I didn't expect any company to go to such lengths to make students comfortable. We were well taken care of." "The field trips give us an idea of how things are done, and we got to go places we wouldn't otherwise have access to." "The workshop gave us an idea of what is going on in the country, and what will take place in the future. I got to a broader perspective of the country and the economy." "We learned social skills, about how to get along with everybody and to work in teams from watching the NGC team work. They were friendly, professional and down to earth and that passed on to the students." "It was fun and educational; we learned skills for life." "You don't usually see such professionalism and other companies, but it was evident in NGC." "I'm impressed with the company, and I wish to come work for them one day." |
